Home of the lemurs
MADAGASCAR IS THE WORLD'S FOURTH LARGEST ISLAND, A WALKERS PARADISE AND A MUST-DO FOR ALL THOSE WITH A SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE.This magical island compares to the Galapagos Islands for its unique wildlife and diverse habitats. The island offers a rich culture steeped in traditions, ceremonies and taboos coupled with the warmth and hospitality of the local people. Travel around the island will be by 4x4, bus, boat and plane.
Starting in the vibrant and colourful capital of Antananarivo this safari will visit eight national parks which offer outstanding game veiwing & trekking opportunities combined with day and night walks. We will visit Andasibe-Mantadia National Park to see the Indri lemur, trek in the pristine rainforests of Ranamafana National Park, explore the rugged canyons in Isalo National Park, and visit the Tsingy limestone spires of Ankarana.
In the central highlands there will be opportunity to buy souvenirs from the acclaimed wood-carvers and weavers of Ambositra, while here a visit to a local community reserve will be taken for a close-up expereince with cheeky ring-tailed lemurs.
Once reaching the south-west coast there will be time to relax under the palm trees of Ifaty beach, or to snorkel and explore the small marine reserve close by. A day walk will be taken into the spiny forest home to octopus trees, ancient baobabs, and bottle trees.
Leaving the coast behind a short flight will be taken to the northern tip of the island to the bustling frontier town of Diego Suarez, a place not often visited by regular travellers and which is the gateway to two completely different Reserves:
Montagne d'Ambre is situated on an extinct volcano covered in rainforest, whereas Ankárana offers a wonderland of limestone pinnacles which was once an ancient sea bed.
The drive to Monagne d'Ambre National park is by 4x4 up a steep and often eroded track through tradional villages, and farmland. A day walk in the forest will be taken by the local guides giving great opportunity to see many species. Another day walk will be conducted in Ankarana National Park to check out the unique limestone pinnacles locally known as Tsingy.
After exploring these two national parks, the last days of the tour will be spent relaxing and island-hopping in the Nosy Be Archipelago situated in the warm Indian Ocean.
A photographer & wildlife enthusiasts dream, Madagascar offers a great opportunity to observe many animal species and plants found nowhere else in the world. As yet still untouched by the ways of the western world Madgascar is an exciting destination for those who want to get off the beaten track.
